Understanding E-Safety

E-safety is the safe and responsible use of technology. This includes not just the internet but all forms of electronic communication, such as online messaging, social media, gaming devices, text messages, and email.

More than just electronic security, e-safety is fundamentally about behaviour and attitude. It highlights the need to educate children and young people about the benefits, risks, and responsibilities of using technology.

The Core Principles of E-Safety

  • Safeguarding: E-safety is a critical part of safeguarding children and young people in the digital world.
  • Education over Restriction: The goal is to educate children about the risks and benefits of being online, not simply to restrict their access. By empowering them with knowledge, they can develop safer online behaviours both in and out of school.
  • A Positive Approach: E-safety emphasises learning to use new technologies in a responsible and positive way, helping young people to understand and navigate the digital landscape confidently.
  • Constant Evolution: As technology rapidly changes, so do the challenges. E-safety is a constantly evolving field, and all school staff—both teaching and non-teaching—must be aware of and able to recognise emerging issues.

Our dedicated E-safety Support is designed to help your school meet these challenges. We provide a range of ready-to-use resources that save you time and help you deliver excellent practice in teaching online and internet safety.
